8. Yikes! Tainted tomatoes and beef recalls

Let's hope 2009 brings a safer food supply. In 2008, tomatoes were thought to be the culprit behind salmonella food poisonings that sickened scores of people in the United States, and—in what is being billed as the largest beef recall in the country's history—the U.S. Department of Agriculture ordered the recall of 143 million pounds of frozen beef from a California slaughterhouse. Tomatoes got the all-clear signal in July, and U.S. health officials believed jalapeno peppers were the source of outbreak. However, consumers who are worried about unsafe food should take precautions and learn the symptoms of food poisoning.
