SUNSET IN VENICE
When painting “Sunset in Venice,” French Impressionist master Claude Monet (1840 – 1925) turned his palette to waters he had not previously charted—the Mediterranean. A meticulous observer of color and light, Monet lyrically express his feelings with unstructured brushwork and a kaleidoscopic array of hues, spontaneously painting complete outdoor scenes. A strong contrast to his home and gardens in Giverny, Monet’s portrayal of Venice’s mysterious canals is vibrantly enlivened with masterful suggestions of form through color.
